You can easily make delicious and nutritious homemade protein shakes and smoothies for a fraction of the cost of a commercially bought protein drink.  In this article we are going to discuss some of the essential Appliances and ingredients that you will need to make your protein shake.

Although on this page, we don’t intend to offer any specific recipes, for those go to our protein shake recipes page, but let’s start with the basics of what you really need and some essential ingredients.  The first things you’re going to need are.

  • A sharp knife
  • A cutting board
  • A variable speed blender.

A hand mixer is okay but you may have trouble blending your ingredients, if they include ice and some hard foods, they also don’t seem to blend as smoothly, so I highly recommend a tabletop blender.

To make a protein shake, that is as equally as good as a pre-made protein drink that you can buy off the shelf, it needs to include three main ingredients, a form of protein, a form of carbohydrate, and some water/fluid.  You also want to consider how sweet you want the protein shake to taste.  A mixture of fruits and vegetables will provide you with all of the ingredients that you need, and of course you can then mix them to your own taste.

So let’s look at some of the forms of protein that you can use to start making your shake.

  • Brown Rice protein
  • Pea protein
  • Soy protein
  • Bean protein
  • And all sorts of vegetable protein

The choice of protein that you use is an individual one, and can be bought at a health food shop.  And there are many others that you can choose from.  You just need to do a little bit of research.  So what about the forms of carbohydrate, let’s look at some options.

Fruits like apples and bananas, Kiwi, oranges and really any other fruit that you like, including some berries are great forms of carbohydrate, and of course they have some protein too.  You can also add some vegetables to the list, vegetables like carrots, spinach and broccoli are all great sources of carbohydrate as well as vitamins and minerals.

Lastly, then you’re going to need some form of liquid or water to mix it all here are some good choices.

  • Cold water or ice cubes
  • Skimmed milk, to keep the fat content down
  • Fruit juices, like apple or orange juice (freshly squeezed)

Once you’ve chosen your ingredients, put them in the blender and switching on until your shake or smoothie is just how you like it.  You of course have the choice of using a protein powder other than those above if they’re not to your taste, but as you can see there are great alternatives on offer.
